Q: What do you get when you filter color and adrenaline through a story and a vision?

A: Scenic Painting

PREFACE

Before SMAD filmmaking classes and projects kicked in and cinematography became my passion, I concentrated on scenic painting within the theatre part of my double-major. The following narrative is from early in my Sophomore year. Instead of a re-write, I present it to you as a vignette of one step along my path to creating entertainment magic.

Good thing for me that I went through high school as a student, painter, actress and competing gymnast. It was time management or bust. Zip forward to now. Bridge to Tarabithia goes up in two weeks and it's 10a 'til 10p in Forbes Center rehearsing, and then shift into Charge Artist mode until the wee hours. I have a paper due Monday morning, and there's another little complication; the opportunity I've been given to charge the mainstage show School for Scandal overlaps preparation for Tarabithia. This is going to be a hectic few weeks, but bring it on!

Hold on... This is a fall Saturday on a gorgeous college campus in the Shenandoah Mountains. I could be walking around in a cozy sweatshirt watching leaves change, or sleeping until noon, or binging Game of Thrones. Is this what I signed up for? You bet!

I love to kick back in the Quad on a beautiful fall afternoon, and walk downtown Harrisonburg, and treat myself to a few episodes of whatever's interesting - and cheer on my Dukes every Saturday they play in Bridgeforth - but I'm on my primary mission this particular afternoon.  That mission, should I chose to accept it - and I have - is to soak up every bit of wisdom and experience I can from my professors and directors in JMU Theatre, and the School of Media Arts & Design (SMAD), in the two-point-something years I have left in this wonderful place. There are stories to tell, sets to build and films to make, and my job between now and 2020 is to prepare myself to walk into the business I'm starting to learn and love, while building four years of JMU memories that I'll cherish for the rest of my life.

Enjoy a peek at some of the sets my teams and I created during high school and college.

Are you in high school and realize that you've been bitten by the scenic painting bug? It's never too early to start giving back all of the mentoring with which I've been blessed, so don't hesitate to shoot me a question.
